Discovering Night Below — and Starting the Journey

The first time I came across Night Below: An Underdark Campaign was through a video by Matt Colville. Something about the scale and tone of the campaign immediately caught my attention, and before long I decided to track down a copy of the boxed set—at no small cost.

Night Below has a reputation for being one of the finest campaigns ever written for AD&D 2nd Edition. Its author, Carl Sargent, is also a figure surrounded by a certain mystery, having seemingly disappeared from public life under unusual circumstances. That alone adds a strange layer of intrigue to the work.

The AD&D 2nd Edition boxed sets in general are something special. They represent a style of adventure design that feels both ambitious and tangible—complete with maps, handouts, and even dedicated monster booklets. Most of them are of consistently high quality, and as a collector, they never fail to bring a smile to my face.

Night Below is divided into three parts. The first, Evils of Haranshire, is a large sandbox-style campaign, featuring multiple smaller adventures tied together by an overarching storyline. It gives players freedom to explore while gradually building toward something much darker.

The remaining two parts take the players deep beneath the surface into the Underdark. Here, the structure becomes more directed, shifting from open exploration to a more focused and narrative-driven experience.

The Challenge of Running Night Below an underdark campaign

As I worked my way through the campaign books, it quickly became overwhelming. It also became clear that this is not a campaign you can simply pick up and run as-is—the Dungeon Master has to put in serious work to make it truly playable.

Many DMs report that the campaign tends to fall apart when reaching the second book, Perils of the Underdark. A common issue is that player characters often lack a strong enough connection to the surface world, which weakens their motivation to descend into the depths. Without that emotional or narrative drive, the campaign can quite literally lose momentum.

That challenge is part of what drew me in.

How This Blog Started

At one point, I made a post on Reddit (r/Nightbelow), mentioning that I was considering sharing summaries from my campaign. A wise user by the name of u/Cabbagesalad404  replied: “This sounds like a blog.” They suggested I should create one and share it there instead.

So—here we are.

This is the first post on my blog, and it will document my journey running Night Below.

What to Expect

Going forward, I’ll be sharing:
  • Campaign preparation and planning
  • Challenges and how I approach solving them
  • Session summaries and reflections
  • Lessons learned along the way
  • My own tweaks and adjustments to better fit my players and my version of the world

The goal is not just to run Night Below, but to make it work—and to share that process in a way that might help others who want to take on the same challenge.
